Small Craft Breweries Stowe

There are a dizzying number of micro-breweries in and around Stowe, making it a daunting task to chart a tour for an afternoon's crawl. Fortunately, Rick, at Four Points Tours (4pointvt.com) is here to help. He tailors his tours around various criteria, depending on the location of pick-up, or season. "Most folks are interested in having a good time—not focused or worried about which particular breweries they're likely to see," Rick says, of his half day brewery tours.

Here are some of the unique and flavorful treats you might find on an afternoon's tour:

A River Runs Gruit, from Rock Art in Morrisville. Gruit is an ale brewed with zero hops, and this particular version is flavored with camomile, lavender, rose hips, and elderberry for a floral aroma with a faintly sweet taste. After sampling the seasonal brews, be sure to take a tour with the brewmaster.

Also in Morrisville, Lost Nation's signature brew is Gose, a German wheat beer with sea salt and coriander, and a mild tartness from the cellaring process. This is also a good stop for snacks and beer go-withs. Choose from a selection of fondues, pates, and signature sandwiches.

At Von Trapp's Brewery in Stowe you won't find IPAs or double IPAs or the latest hoppy beer trend. Here you will find good old-fashioned German style lagers, including Bohemian Pilsner, the 2015 Silver Medal winner for both the Great American Beer Festival, and the Great International Beer Festival.

Idletyme Brewing Company is Stowe's newest brew pub, from the owners of Stowe's renowned fine dining establishment Micheal's on the Hill. Here try one of their seasonal flagship brews along with fried pickles, Sriracha wings, or a fried green tomato biscuit.

Heady Topper, Alchemist's flagship double IPA, was named 2013's Best Beer in the World by Beer Advocate. Alchemist is currently closed to the public, so head to Prohibition Pig, a trendy Waterbury eatery, where you can try all Vermont's signature beers, including Heady Topper, Lawson's Sip of Sunshine, and from Hill Farmstead—named Best Brewery in the World in 2013 by Rate Beer—Abner imperial pale ale, named for the brewmaster's grandfather who owned the dairy farm where this small batch brewery resides today.

Other distilled spirits you might sample on your tour include Green Mountain Distillery's tasting flight of 1/4 shots of 100% certified organic vodka, or a taste of the sublime Maple Liqueur. Stowe Cider offers samples four hard ciders ranging from dry brut to sweet, and be sure to try a cider mimosa when available.
